Dee has been in the weight room since high school but did not start learning how to master the barbell until she started CrossFit in 2011. From there, Dee decided she was much better at weighted implements than gymnastics skills (even though she can still teach the basics) and decided to pick up the barbell full time.
After tearing multiple ligaments in her knee for the 3rd time while playing college rugby, she worked with a team of physical therapists and strength coaches to avoid surgery. Since then, Dee has been studying, practicing, and teaching strength, conditioning, along with injury prevention, minimization, and mobility improvement.
Her transition into Olympic weightlifting has allowed her to practice these strategies for herself, 10+ years of high school teaching and coaching has allowed her to practice these strategies for others. Due to her experience of being a weight training teacher with up to 40 students per class, Dee is well equipped to work with groups or classes of clients.
I find it really important to move for a lifetime. It is also important to stay up to date and to continue learning. My goals for myself right now for sport is to work towards becoming a Professional Highland Games Athlete as well as continue taking records in Olympic Weightlifting. I train 3-6 days a week to try an accomplish these goals. My goal for myself in education is to renew my National board Certification by 2027. I also regularly collaborate with other coaches about ideas, methodologies, philosophies, and technical breakdown of movement to continue progressing as a personal trainer and as a teacher.
Some of the most important qualities I feel like a good personal trainer and teacher should have are:
* Lead by example- I love to show people "what could be"
* Tell clients "Why"- If you're coach doesn't know why, then why are you doing it? I want to educate my clients on the "why" so they learn as well.
* Show that I am human- if I do not know an answer to a question, I will take the time to research it and create a learning experience for the client and myself. I also, will show you that I am flawed- I miss lifts and fall all of the time. Failure is a large part of creating success.
